I have a little squirrel I have a little squirrel Or at least to me, it seems. She comes to me when I call For a nut or a seed to eat. I have a little squirrel Of course, I know it’s not mine. God made them one and all His to delight us all. I have a little squirrel I have not named her at all. But I know it is a girl As she stood up to show us all. I have a little squirrel That comes for a bite or two. Will she bring her little ones In the spring to share her tasty plate ? I have a little squirrel She climbs my pant leg so She can reach the peanut To sit and eat or run to hide it. I have a little squirrel Hairs glisten in the sun, clean and bright. Now she scratches. Is it a flee (that bits) she feels? I have a little squirrel Who comes when I call While others shake their tails While they scamper away. I have a little squirrel I don’t like chased away By our neighbor’s cat Or their barking dogs. Other little squirrels, though, Teases those below with a Steady chat-chat chattering and a whipping of their tails. I started thinking about this poem on 2/21/2019 as I was feeding her sunflower seeds and peanuts on our patio table. I started writing this poem about 11:00 PM on 2/21/2019. First Draft. Now, It is my little cat that likes to chase the squirrels. He even climbs the trees to try to get closer to them. They just keep chattering at him as they climb higher. (Added 5/27;2024.)
I enjoy writing them when they seem so obvious and fall together nicely.
