Life and Living
Part Twenty-Four
A person who worships an idol cannot worship God. Turning this statement around, it becomes: A person who worships God cannot worship an idol. Both of these statements could be found to be true.
Another true statement backed up by the Bible might be stated this way: God does not want anyone who worships Him to worship an idol.
A short discussion on this follows.
An idol may be any carved image that is prayed to or worshiped (or served) in any form. Paul, in Colossians 3:5, adds a list that he calls idols. It reads, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed which is idolatry.”
Any of these that Paul named activities, thoughts, or desires can be idols.
If we find ourselves consistently involved in any of these, we practice idolatry while trying to worship God.
This practice will not work for God. He alone is God. He does not share you or me with any of these earthly natures you might be living with in your Life.
Paul does not just suggest the act. He says, "put to death," (Quit doing these.) all of these traits mentioned. These separate you and your worship from God.
The next time you begin your prayer to God, think about these words: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed.
Do these somehow fit into your Life?
Put these to death. Quit doing these.
God listens to each humble heart.
