Life and Living
Part Twenty-Two
I am no different than anyone else. When I get hungry, I find something to eat.
But there might be something different with my appetite or choice of food.
I am not finicky. For me, leftover food is very satisfying.
I enjoy slightly soured milk. Buttermilk with salt and pepper makes an enjoyable drink, even if unusual for some people.
But at this point, though, I have no choice. I have to confess a sin that has occurred a time or two in my Life.
This is not a sin I have committed, but something I should have been doing.
Yes, God notices when we don't do things that we should be doing. Even though I may hide my sin, other people may be able to know this sin has been giving me trouble.
Let me first confess my occasional sin. It is not "hungering and thirsting for righteousness."
This action of "hungering and thirsting for righteousness" is not just something to do when a person first believes and obeys what Peter told his listeners in Acts chapter 2 to do.
Instead, this action is an ongoing way of Living for all believers.
But let us talk about Matthew 5:6 first. It says: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."
I will use the word "Happy" instead of the word "Blessed," and it may make more sense.
If I don't or when I don't hunger and thirst for righteousness, I don't get blessed or made happy. I may hide that I am not being blessed or happy, but can I be sure I am that good an actor?
Maybe not, so others may know something is wrong but can't put their finger on it.
To me, hungering and thirsting for righteousness is being devoted to times of Bible study and deep prayer. When I don't sink my body and mind (and maybe even soul) into Bible study time, I am not hungering and thirsting for God's righteousness.
(Again, forgive me and pray for me.) How can we know God's character if we don't know God?
Our memory goes slack when we don't immerse ourselves in His word.
We can't remember what makes God righteous (or what he hates), so how can we live pleasing Him?
Life and Living will be made happy when we hunger and thirst for righteousness -the ways that please God.
