Our conscience is activated as a child by our growing into a sense of morality – the right and wrong of Life and Living. When we feel we have done nothing wrong, we have a clear conscience. When we learn what a lie is and tell a lie, our conscience is convicted, and we know we have done something wrong. God gave Adam and Eve a clouded conscience as soon as they ate some of the forbidden fruit. A child may try to hide the evidence of a wrong deed. A student will try to hide their "cheat sheet" from their teacher. Thieves may try to hide with a mask or other items to hide their appearance. Darkness is also used to conceal their activities.
A person with a clear conscience will feel no need to hide. It is a good feeling to have nothing to hide.
When a person has been baptized for the forgiveness of their sin, God forgives the sin and gives that person his Holy Spirit. Hebrews 10:22 says our hearts are cleaned from an evil conscience as our body was washed by pure water (baptism.)

Then there are the words of Jesus in Matthew 13:15, quoting the Prophet Isaiah where He speaks to the hearts of individuals becoming calloused so that they are no longer willing or able to respond to the nudges from the conscience. Many of these folks use and abuse others and sometimes end up in prison ...
