Life and Living
Part Forty-Eight
Written for my self examination.
Luke 12:47-48
47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
I think God wants each of us to take stock of ourselves. Because I am "in Christ," I am God's servant. Does my Life fit the image of the servant in verse 47? If that is me, when will I be beaten with many blows, or is it a picture of eternal punishment? I don't want either one, so what should I do or what can I do?
Contrite repentance is needed - repentance like Jonah's when he finally used all his talents and skills to obey God.
Looking back over parts of my Life, I meditate on the last sentence in verse 48 and question myself: "Do I fit the 'everyone' in this sentence? Again, I ask: "What can I do, or can I do anything at all?

Perhaps the parable is not about knowledge but about obedience. It was interesting to me the first time I really became aware from reading the writings of Moses of the need for atonement for sins of omission as well as sins of commission. While atonement is still required for sins committed in ignorance, it appears that the consequences or the penalty from our Master for sins of blatant disobedience is much more severe. While we can only speculate about our next life, we can observe this in our own world ... when someone knows that what they are doing is against God, they seem to make a bigger mess of things for themselves and for those in their circle of influence. Good thoughts ...
