Proverbs For Life
Proverbs are wise sayings that guide us in our life choices.
I like this one.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge."
If the fear of the Lord is only the beginning of knowledge, where will the obedience to the Lord take us?
The book of Proverbs is divided into 30 chapters. There is too much in each chapter to try to read one chapter each day of the month, but this is what some have tried.
A few verses may be enough for one to consider at any one time. Reading proverbs will open up our souls to ourselves to examine. Proverbs will put us into a search for our true self: who am I now, but who does God want me to be? What does he want me to be like?
If the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, then knowing the Lord is a lifelong pursuit.
The Old Testament is a story of how God interacts with mankind. It is a story meant to bring us so we will interact with Jesus Christ, the son of God. Jesus was the promised sacrifice for sin found in the Old Testament.
God's love for mankind brought him from heaven (God's realm) to earth so that we might have life, eternal life. (John 3:16) Christ's sacrifice should cause more than just a fear of the Lord. It should also generate a love for the Lord.
If we love the Lord, then we will want to obey him. The God in the Old Testament will lead us to the Christ of the New Testament. It is Jesus we want to believe in, love, and obey. It is Jesus we want as our life's example. What would Jesus do if he were in my shoes is what we need to be wrestling with? Do we know enough about who Jesus is to help us make wise choices? Do we believe him enough to obey him and make wise life choices?
We can't go back and relive our life. All we can do is go on from today.
Tomorrow's choices do not have to be the same as yesterday's. We can make different choices when we see that some of our picks have been bad.
The Book of Proverbs is an excellent book to look into as a mirror to see who we are. Do we like what we see? Jesus wants to help us make wise choices so he can say," Well done."

Good points. Should we choose to study all of the scriptures and be willing to hold our own thoughts, words and deeds up to the life of Jesus or next to the commands and instructions from the writers, we can easily the gap between God's desires for us and our reality. Thankfully that gap is filled by the blood of Jesus so that when our best attempts to be righteous fall short; God's grace, mercy and forgiveness are readily available to restore our status as sons and daughters.
